How hard is the CCNA exam?
Cisco designs the CCNA as a starting point: no formal prerequisites, aimed at entry-to-mid-level IT professionals, and built on the assumption that you have little to no networking knowledge.

Where the difficulty comes from
Breadth. The v1.1 blueprint runs from cabling and IPv4 subnetting through Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), network address translation (NAT), access control lists (ACLs) and wireless security to REST APIs and Ansible (Cisco v1.1 exam topics). Each piece is learnable alone; the work is holding all of it for a single sitting.
Doing as well as knowing. Cisco’s topics page lists performance-based questions next to multiple choice and drag-and-drop, and its exam tutorials page names labs. Cisco also states that you can’t pass the CCNA by just reading a book, and points candidates to Packet Tracer and Cisco Modeling Labs.
No published bar. Cisco does not publish a passing score, so there is no number to aim at; the CCNA passing score page explains what the score report shows in its place.

What the command line asks of you
Configuring one router interface. Each prompt marks a mode, and most commands are accepted only in their own mode.
Router> enableRouter# configure terminalRouter(config)# interface GigabitEthernet0/1Router(config-if)# ip address 192.0.2.1 255.255.255.0Router(config-if)# no shutdownRouter(config-if)# endRouter# show ip interface briefPrompts: > user EXEC, # privileged EXEC, (config)# global configuration, (config-if)# interface configuration. 192.0.2.0/24 is a documentation range.
Signals that the scope is under control
- You can work out the network, broadcast and usable range of a /27 without a calculator.
- You know which mode each command needs and which show command verifies it.
- You can explain route selection in order: longest prefix first, then administrative distance, then metric (longest prefix match).
- You have built small topologies in Packet Tracer or Cisco Modeling Labs and broken them on purpose.
- Your timed sets on the mock exam hold steady across every study area.
- You are following a week-by-week route such as the CCNA study plan.
Questions about the level
Is the CCNA tied to Cisco equipment?
Yes. Cisco describes the certification as validating skills in installing, configuring and troubleshooting Cisco-based enterprise networks (Cisco CCNA certification page), so the command line you practice is Cisco IOS.
Does Cisco publish a difficulty rating for the CCNA?
No. Cisco publishes no pass rate and no passing score. What it does publish is a level (entry-to-mid) and an assumption (little to no networking knowledge).
Is there a smaller Cisco exam to take first?
Cisco describes CCST Networking as a first step toward CCNA certification (Cisco CCST Networking page). Neither has a prerequisite; the CCNA vs CCST comparison sets the two side by side.
